When you think about CBD you may assume that it has the same effects as THC, however, this is not the case. While CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, the effects of CBD and THC are inherently different.

The most important distinction between CBD and THC is that THC is psychoactive, meaning that it produces a high. THC is derived from Marijuana which is why it produces that high.

CBD on the other hand, is non-psychoactive, meaning that it does not produce a high. CBD is derived from hemp rather than a marijuana plant which is why it does not contain THC. Some are standoffish about using CBD because of the relation it has to THC, but CBD does not make you feel high.

Now you’re probably wondering- what is the difference between hemp and marijuana? Aren’t they the same thing? The answer is no, they are not. Hemp and marijaua are different species of cannabis. The difference between hemp and marijuana is the THC concentration in each. Hemp, as outlined by Healthline's article, “Hemp vs. Marijuana: What’s the Difference?”, is cannabis that contains 0.3% or less concentration of THC. Marijuana is cannabis containing more than 0.3% of THC.

Moreover, THC and CBD affect different receptors in the brain. This is another reason why CBD and THC are different. VeryWellMind wrote an article called, “CBD vs. THC: What's the Difference?” which states,

“CBD and THC have the same molecular structure, but there are differences in how these molecules are arranged that are responsible for the differing effects they have. By mimicking endocannabinoids, they bind with receptors and cause different effects in the body.”

This excerpt from VeryWellMind emphasizes that the biological nature of THC and CBD are different. The contrasting molecular structure of THC and CBD is a fundamental reason why THC makes you feel high and CBD doesn’t.

As you can see, the similarity between CBD and THC lies in the fact that both are cannabinoids. With that being said, however, the way that CBD and THC make you feel are very different. As THC and Cannabis become legalized throughout more of the United States, it is important to know that CBD and THC are fundamentally different.
