Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, is a type of cannabinoid. A Cannabinoid is a chemical naturally found within Cannabis. CBD, as Healthline describes, is different from THC because it doesn’t cause the same intoxicating effects that THC does. In short, CBD does not make you feel the same “high” that  marijuana does. CBD and THC are inherently different. While these two chemicals are both derived from the same place, each have a contrasting impact when taken. CBD has become increasingly popular because of its calming effects, alleviating symptoms of anxiety and chronic pain, and helping people to sleep better at night.

As CBD has gained more attention over time, more studies have been done about CBD. The article, “Understanding CBD: The calming and sleep promoting benefits of Cannabidiol” written by The Sleep Doctor, outlines how CBD interacts with the brain and the benefits of taking CBD. First, because CBD helps to mitigate symptoms of anxiety, a direct result is that users sleep better at night. As a result of CBD inducing better sleep, people that suffer with Insomnia may also benefit from the use of CBD.

Alongside CBD’s ability to reduce restlessness, CBD also helps to counter mental and physical symptoms of anxiety. The Sleep Doctor notes a study done where people took CBD before public speaking and the participants felt less anxious after taking CBD. It has also been shown that CBD helps to lessen feelings of Social Anxiety. CBD’s ability to counter the limiting nature of anxiety in social situations could improve one’s life significantly.

As a result of the lasting Coronavirus Pandemic, the amount of people reported with symptoms of Anxiety, Depression, and Insomnia has greatly increased. It is no surprise that Covid-19 has caused significant distress to the US population. Social distancing, self isolation, and the financial burden experienced by many are all contributing actors in the rise of mental health issues.

A study conducted by KFFreports that in July, United States adults 18 and older (53%) said that the stress of the pandemic has negatively impacted their mental health. This staggering 53% is up from 39% in May. KFF also reports that rates of anxiety and depression are especially up in adults 65 and older. KFF notes that prior to the pandemic in a study taken in 2018, one in ten adults over 65 reported symptoms of depression and anxiety. A study conducted in August 2020 reports that now one in four adults over the age of 65 struggle with depression and anxiety. As these figures suggest, COVID-19 has been a difficult time for many, and cause for the immense increase in  the number of people struggling with mental health issues.

CBD oil could be a revelation for individuals struggling to cope with their anxiety, restlessness, depression and insomnia. With that being said, however, always talk to your doctor before taking another supplement or medication. While CBD is helpful to some, it is still important to consult your physician beforehand.
